Historic Neighborhood Treasures Open to the Public During the 2015 GE Realty Plot Home & Garden Tour

Schenectady, NY - Don’t miss a great opportunity to see inside some of the beautiful historic houses that once were called home by the first innovators and creators of the General Electric Company! The GE Realty Plot Association invites you to experience the charm and nostalgia of one Schenectady’s most historic neighborhoods during its House and Garden Tour, June 6th and June 7th, 2015.

This year’s tour features six homes and one garden in the historic enclave of the General Electric Realty Plot; an area known for its history of innovation, first US television broadcasts, first electric homes and engineering geniuses such as Charles Proteus Steinmetz.

Purchased from Union College by the General Electric Company for construction of homes for its executives, the forty acre property was managed and developed in 1889 by a subsidiary of GE known as the Schenectady Realty Company. What you will see on the tour is the result of the SRC’s deliberate development and design, centered upon the picturesque method of landscaping; creating the park like setting that is still evident today. Tour-goers enjoy a glimpse of life in the 19th and early 20th century; from ornate chandeliers and dining rooms to exquisite staircases and meticulously planned gardens.  Visitors will also have the opportunity to see inside the first home built on this property in 1900 as part of the planned development.

For over two decades, the General Electric Realty Plot has played host to a biennial Home and Garden Tour, offering residents and visitors alike a unique opportunity to enter some of the City’s historic private homes.  The GE Realty Plot Association hosts the Tour–giving visitors the opportunity to explore and enjoy restored historic interiors and special furnishings that are not generally open to the public, and have been treasured by families for generations. The last tour, presented in 2013, brought over 400 visitors to the neighborhood, and this year we expect to double that.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1978, the GE Realty Plot is a unique historic neighborhood located in the heart of Schenectady New York.

Tour hours will be Noon – 4:00pm on Saturday and Sunday, June 6th and 7th.

Who should go?
Architecture enthusiasts, Victorian era admirers, history buffs and anyone interested in seeing a unique, historical and well-preserved part of Schenectady.

Why is this tour important to our area?
This tour gives the stewards and caretakers of one this city’s gems the opportunity and means to maintain its historic character and preserve iconic places for future generations to continue to enjoy and share.

Where do I go?
The homes being showcased this year are located on Lowell Rd., Nott St., Avon Rd., Stratford Rd. and Lenox Rd. All of the houses will be clearly identified with signs and balloons.

Where do I get tickets?
Pre-sale tickets are available at these businesses located in Schenectady:  Marty's True Value, The Open Door Bookstore, Experience and Lange Pharmacy. Tickets are also available on the days of the event at any home (other than Abbe Hall on Lenox Rd.) on the tour.
